An Introduction to Nancy Buehler

This year I am celebrating my twentieth year as a book club leader/book reviewer, and my tenth year as a public library Reader's Advisor! How time flies when you are having fun.

A third generation English Literature major (De Pauw University, Greencastle Indiana) and lifelong bookworm, I grew up in suburban Milwaukee, and have lived in Northbrook over 30 years. Every room in my house has a full bookcase, or two or three. I am the proud mother of three grown children.

Ten years ago, I started the ideal (other) part time job at the Glencoe Public Library. I am responsible for buying all the new fiction, and advising patrons on book selection; the perfect job for me!

If I'm not at the library, I ‘m usually reading literary or historic fiction, or preparing for discussions or reviews. (This year I am happily planning my second daughter's wedding, so I'm reading a lot of books and magazines with "Bride" in the title. :) )

When I facilitate a book discussion, it usually lasts about an hour and a half. We talk about the author's biography, historical and cultural settings of the book, and of course the story itself. Then we talk about other books we want to discuss. My groups meet in homes, libraries, and private clubs.

Reviews last about an hour, with me behind a podium as an after lunch (or breakfast) speaker for a literary or philanthropic group. Again, I set the book in its historic and cultural setting, and then tell the story, rarely giving away the ending. I distribute a printed list of book suggestions.
